How to Discover Your Style

Hey y’all, it’s been a minute since I’ve posted an entry on my blog but I am back lol.

Lately there’s been a huge boom in social media in the sense that we’re consuming it a loooot more than we used to because, quite frankly, sometimes we don’t have anything better to do. On that note, a lot of you are probably discovering fashion accounts or just simply following accounts that make you wish you had their closet.

I’ve been binge watching a YouTube channel called Bestdressed and it’s honestly been making me want to just run to the store and buy a whole bunch of clothing lol.

Fashion is essentially an art and, although I’m no fashion expert, I do believe that our personalities can easily reflect on the items that we wear on our bodies. Do you wish for you presence to be loud with a black outfit, stilettos, lace leggings and a bold red lip? Or do you want to be more quiet with your elegance while displaying a gold layered necklace on your chest, hoop earrings, white shirt and paperbag shorts?

Today I’m going to be showing you tips on how you can discover what fashion trend/style is more your taste and how to incorporate that in your wardrobe.

Note: all pictures are from Pinterest

The first step you can take on this chic journey is to follow social media accounts that fit your aesthetic and the style that you truly love. Whenever I’m looking for fashion inspiration, I simply look on the explore page of my IG account or browse on Pinterest until I find accounts/pages that best suit my taste in attire.

This works with makeup looks as well as it’s really simple to find beauty influencers or enthusiasts with just a quick search through social media.

{Remember to support people of color and small pages, not just celebrities. There is so much talent out there if you just give it a chance.}

Once you begin getting more or less an idea of what you want the items of your closet to consist of, start buying different articles/accessories once a month. (Of course, if you can afford it you can buy much more often but not a lot of us are able to do that).

Something as simple as a bandana, a layered necklace or socks can bring life and personality to your outfit. Remember, it’s also important to not just buy from any brand. Nobody’s perfect but we do have the moral duty to research and choose the companies we buy from as responsibly as possible. This doesn’t mean that you aren’t going to make mistakes occasionally and buy from bad brands. But making a conscious decision while buying things can make a difference in making sure the items you where represent your values.

So anyway, having said that, bringing new additions to your wardrobe little by little can definitely get you one step closer to having your dream closet. I suggest buying more versatile items that you can wear with different outfit combinations and still make them work.

Exploring doesn’t mean to buy the first thing you see without thinking about it. It means to get creative and buy one or two things that take you out of your comfort zone. Don’t limit yourself to just one brand, store or style. You can have many different aesthetics, each one to match your daily mood.

However, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with buying something that, even tho it might not go exactly with the color template you’re looking for, it catches your eye. Fashion can be repetitive at times and having a pastel or neon yellow purse in your closet can bring life to an otherwise simple outfit.

It’s also important to mention that if you do not have the financial option to buy new pieces of clothing, you can always transform your style just by mixing up whatever you have in your wardrobe.

Little things that you combine here & there can really transform your style without having to spend a dime. It’s incredible what handed down jewelry can do to compliment your skin tone, purses that add the professional/sophisticated vibe for just the right occasion and showcasing bralettes/lingerie can make your outfit display a risqué quality.

Even just swapping heals for converse can change the entire mood of an ensemble. You can also combine baggy t-shirts with short denim skirts for days in which you don’t really want to put a lot of effort into what you’re wearing but you still want to look good. Tie that together with a messy bun, jewelry and some hair clips and people will think that you actually took more than 15 minutes to get ready. ♡

And a final tip would be to look up color palettes on websites like Pinterest to kind of see what colors are the ones you’re most drawn too. This will help you understand what tones you gravitate more towards when you’re shopping and it’ll save you time.

Needless to say, this doesn’t mean that every item of clothing that you buy will fall into the colors of the palette you choose. This is just to help you see if you like warmer/cooler/neutral tones and it’ll help you narrow down what clothing to get. For example, if you like the color palette shown above and gravitate more towards warm colors, earthy tones or pink, then you might find it a bit unlikely that you would find an article of clothing and/or accessory that is green or bright yellow and actually want to buy it.

After figuring out what colors you like, you can have fun exploring and researching outfits that you can buy that are shades you are attracted to the most.

Just a reminder: this doesn’t mean that aaaaall the items in your closet are gonna be the same color. This is just a tool you can use to determine what are your favorite colors and how you can also make them work with each other.

Then again, I’m not an expert on fashion so I might just be talking a lot of crap lol. My bad.

This are just some ideas that I really find useful, at least for me. Even if you don’t have a specific style, who cares? Just be you, feel comfortable in your own skin and work. it. honey.

stay cute!

J xx
